Summary

An immediate national bestseller, Hegemony or Survival demonstrates how, for more than half a century the United States has been pursuing a grand imperial strategy with the aim of staking out the globe。 Our leaders have shown themselves willing-as in the Cuban missile crisis-to follow the dream of dominance no matter how high the risks。 World-renowned intellectual Noam Chomsky investigates how we came to this perilous moment and why our rulers are willing to jeopardize the future of our species。

With the striking logic that is his trademark, Chomsky tracks the U。S。 government's aggressive pursuit of "full spectrum dominance" and vividly lays out how the most recent manifestations of the politics of global control-from unilateralism to the dismantling of international agreements to state terrorism-cohere in a drive for hegemony that ultimately threatens our existence。 Lucidly written, thoroughly documented, and featuring a new afterword by the author, Hegemony or Survival is a definitive statement from one of today's most influential thinkers。

Everyone should read Chomsky at least once a year to remind themselves who is to blame for most of the shit that happens in the world

Always difficult reading a current affairs books so far after the fact, a lot of the things that Chomsky are saying seem obvious but it's worth remembering that this was written as the invasion was beginning, so there was pretty much a blanket ban in the media on his position。 If you want hard geopolitical analysis from him there's dozens better books out there, this is pretty lightweight by his standards but does give a useful introduction to the topic。 Always difficult reading a current affairs books so far after the fact, a lot of the things that Chomsky are saying seem obvious but it's worth remembering that this was written as the invasion was beginning, so there was pretty much a blanket ban in the media on his position。 If you want hard geopolitical analysis from him there's dozens better books out there, this is pretty lightweight by his standards but does give a useful introduction to the topic。 。。。more

Among the most harrowing books I've ever read on American morality。 Chomsky's words are devastating: he writes with a controlled fury, but his cynicism never completely eclipses the small hope he has for the future of our world。 Despite my passion for reading about U。S。 history, I was left in awe of just how much I didn't know, just how much I was able to learn from this book。 Among the most harrowing books I've ever read on American morality。 Chomsky's words are devastating: he writes with a controlled fury, but his cynicism never completely eclipses the small hope he has for the future of our world。 Despite my passion for reading about U。S。 history, I was left in awe of just how much I didn't know, just how much I was able to learn from this book。 。。。more

A bit steeped in historical details of the time it was written in, guess I wishing for more theory/broader ideas。 But I did learn a bunch of stuff abt American modern day colonialism and shady methods of securing hegemony。 This country blows 😄

Chomsky is gradually turning into Gandalf。 I have no problem with that。

Tommy

A great primer into why America, on the global stage, is very, very bad。

Unfortunately, I have arrived at Chomsky at a point in life where my cynicism has long since reached its maximum capacity (thanks to the past contributions of many similar authors)。 The pangs of anger I used to feel in the previous decade have now morphed into apathetic eye-rolls or shrugs of resignation。 Nevertheless, dissident literature like this is still important to me if only to periodically reinforce my sanity; and vastly more important to society as a whole, most of whom hopefully are le Unfortunately, I have arrived at Chomsky at a point in life where my cynicism has long since reached its maximum capacity (thanks to the past contributions of many similar authors)。 The pangs of anger I used to feel in the previous decade have now morphed into apathetic eye-rolls or shrugs of resignation。 Nevertheless, dissident literature like this is still important to me if only to periodically reinforce my sanity; and vastly more important to society as a whole, most of whom hopefully are less jaded and pessimistic than I am, if there is any hope at all for the future of humanity。 。。。more

DNF。 It was written in 2004 and I think it suffers from just being out of date。 There are far too many things to be outraged about in the present without going back to the depressing Bush-era policies。

This book is full of contradictions and slanting of opinion (I can’t say facts because the author mixes his opinion universally with facts。 It focuses on how terrible the USA is while everyone one else is force to fall to our dominance。 He chastises every USA leader from Carter to Bush。I prefer a more balanced review of history。

Lovely stuff。 Fuck America。

This is an excellent book demonstrating the tactics by the US government to gain domination of the world, using politics and the military。 It goes into detail about areas of the world like Iraq, Russia, Cuba, Palestine, and Indonesia。

Garret Giblin

what is the goal of american foreign policy? hegemony or survival? the answer will SHOCK you

why is this guy so anti-communist。 parenti was right

It was good but difficult to know

Mostly, I enjoyed it as it provided a perspective that I’ve never really exercised within my own world view。 But the lack of sources in some areas was a little annoying and sort of odd as he gives sources throughout the book。 He also uses a lot of hyperbole。 Either way it was an interesting read and I’m guessing a decent introduction to Chomsky。 It gave me a ton of things to research regarding America’s current and past foreign policy practices。

Daniel

A needed read to understand american foreing policies, why 9/11 happened and what were the consequences in the years after that tragic attack。

Spencer

Brilliant as always

17 years after it’s publication, reading this Chomsky feels somewhat humorous。 Bush and Blair were horrible, but 2020 US foreign policy and Trump ‘leadership’ makes everything previous, pale in comparison。 Reading Chomsky is great to keep the critical analysis sharp, and excellent reminders to all the faux policies and discourses we (collectively around the world) have been fed to justify US sponsored and led global terrorism。

Mosaed Al-Rumman

Eye opening。 Noam Chomsky is the advocate of truth。

The part on the space force is definitely the most interesting part of Kate given it’s now been reinstated。 I wonder if Elon is currently profiting from it。

Chomsky's Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance offers a bold-faced examination of the foreign policy of the United States following the end of World War II, in which the United States, for the first time in history, became a true superpower player on the global stage。 While some may find the analyses and claims made by Chomsky to be extremely controversial, it is hard to argue against his incontrovertible facts。 This book truly opened my eyes to the role the United States p Chomsky's Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance offers a bold-faced examination of the foreign policy of the United States following the end of World War II, in which the United States, for the first time in history, became a true superpower player on the global stage。 While some may find the analyses and claims made by Chomsky to be extremely controversial, it is hard to argue against his incontrovertible facts。 This book truly opened my eyes to the role the United States plays in the international system, and how it will use whatever means - including international terrorism, which Chomsky claims the United States uses often enough to be a terrorist state - in order to maintain its hegemony。 I believe this book is important to any American who has an interest in international relations and America's foreign interventions, as it offers an honest down-to-earth, albeit biased, view of the United States' foreign policy and actions。 。。。more

This book points out in academic fashion which is really the objective of the United States。 Long story short (and it’s an old sleight of hand), the United States comes in the name of peace and good will (democracy)。 However, what actually follows is the hegemony factor in which the country being ‘helped’ is not able to run affairs, i。e。, choose its own leadership on its own terms。 If a(ny) country in which the United States has an interest, does not comply with its covert demands, then it is s This book points out in academic fashion which is really the objective of the United States。 Long story short (and it’s an old sleight of hand), the United States comes in the name of peace and good will (democracy)。 However, what actually follows is the hegemony factor in which the country being ‘helped’ is not able to run affairs, i。e。, choose its own leadership on its own terms。 If a(ny) country in which the United States has an interest, does not comply with its covert demands, then it is subject to violence, rhetoric that it is a terrorist state (middle east) or a puppet of the Russians (Latin America)。 tWhat’s even scary about the book is that most Americans believe the rhetoric, while we purport to be the freest country in the world。 Yet, despite our freedom, capacity and opportunity to do the research, let alone hold our leadership accountable insofar as what the priority really IS, we acquiesce to what our leadership tells us, and then wonder why: (1) the Middle East doesn’t like the United States and (2) why we have a flood of immigrants from Central America。tThe downside of this book unfortunately, is it is academically written; it does not flow to the point where the reader wants to keep up with it, let alone follow what Chomsky is saying。 A little editing to that end, would have been helpful。 Nevertheless, with the academic presentation, one cannot help but see why chillingly, the world looks to the United States in low, but still heightened fear; if the United States feels itself above World Court, NATO, and/or world conventions, then the world sees that the United States sends mixed messages surrounding its creed vs。 its (real) objectives … which leads to the crux of the book: what is more important: hegemony or survival?t 。。。more

Lots of information about the lies and hypocrisy of the Bush administration, but after a while it gets repetitive and it lacks depth。
